About us:

Islington Town Hall is the home of Say I do in Islington and the City of London.

The Town Hall, on fashionable Upper Street, is home to the registration service and our ceremony rooms. This impressive, listed building, with its grand façade and sweeping marble staircase, provides an elegant setting for ceremonies, and an impressive backdrop for photographs.

The Role:

We pride ourselves on providing a professional and personalised service, as a ceremony usher you will be at the heart of this as you welcome our guests and couples on arrival.  You will be responsible for ensuring ceremony rooms and waiting areas are ready and for guiding and supporting couples to ensure the smooth and timely running of events.

Being able to make on the spot decisions, you’ll be the first point of contact for resolving requests and issues quickly and professionally. You’ll also have important first aid and fire safety responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

About you:

We’re looking for friendly, calm, warm, well presented people with excellent spoken English and second to none customer service skills. You will be organised, tactful and capable of thinking on your own two feet. You might enjoy amateur dramatics, or have worked as front of house elsewhere, you might have a background in theatre or hospitality and retail.

Due to the nature of the work, you will be required to work mainly weekends and some bank holidays, but there may be some weekday work if that fits in with your availability.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide a meet and greet ceremonies usher role for all ceremonies delivered at Islington Town Hall on weekends, public holidays and some weekdays where available.

  1. Act as the main point of contact for guests arriving at the Town Hall and direct them to the appropriate ceremony
  2. Display active commitment to a customer focused service by placing the customer at the heart of every aspect of our work
  3. Supervise car parking at the Town Hall and advise guests on the availability of accessible parking onsite and all other off-site parking.
  4. Assist with the entrance of the bridal party and supervise parking in the designated area.
  5. To ensure the comfort, safety and behaviour of guests waiting in the reception area and ceremony rooms
  6. Ensure that ceremony rooms and the grounds are kept clean and free of litter at all times and report any issues to the building Facilities team.
  7.  Set out information and direction signs as appropriate to aid visitors to the Town Hall.
  8. Assist in the provision and set up of all ceremony rooms and safe keeping of all audio equipment operations and monitor noise levels
  9. Supervise ceremony parties for their photographs to ensure fair and equal use for all ceremonies of the grounds. Support the ceremonies staff with any matter as requested.
  10. To undertake training and constructively take part in meetings, supervision, and other events designed to improve communication and assist with the effective development of the post and post holder.
  11. To carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with the council’s commitment to customer service excellence and ensure compliance with the customer care standards.
  12. To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.

Person specification


Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE/NVQ level 2 or can demonstrate equivalent depth of knowledge and experience.
  • Experience of working with and communicating with members of the public
  • Ability to demonstrate good team working skills and deliver high quality, effective and efficient customer services
  • Proven ability to manage time effectively with good organisational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in difficult situations
  • Able to listen to, observe and converse at ease with the public, answer questions and provide advice
  • Attendance as a ceremony usher/co-ordinator during the weekends, bank holidays and as required during busy periods
  • Ability to adhere to the Council's Dignity for All policy

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
